Sustainability guide

Paper stationery is lovable stuff. But, as you sit down to write on your Silvine notebook’s first pristine page, the last thing you want is the thought of swathes of rainforest trees being decimated for this moment of pleasure.

So here are a few things we thought you should know about Silvine, so you can put your fancy new purple pen to paper without so much as a flicker of guilt:

  • 100% of our product materials are from well managed sources, certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or recycled
  • We ensure our paper comes from sources where workers' civil rights are not violated
  • We do not buy paper made from genetically modified trees
  • We do not buy paper made from illegally harvested wood - whether from natural forests, or from forests which have been cleared to make way for plantations or other non-forest enterprises
  • We monitor all our suppliers to ensure they conduct their business in an ethical manner
  • All our suppliers work towards conserving their energy and water usage and the prevention of land, air and water pollution.

Paper fact file

  • In managed forests, for every tree cut down, three to four are replanted in its place.
  • It’s estimated that, in Europe alone, forests are increasing annually by an area equivalent to more than 1.5 million football pitches.
  • The majority of trees cut down in the tropics are cleared to make way for agriculture or provide domestic fuel, not to make paper.
  • Paper fibres can be recycled up to six times. Since 2001, the amount of household waste paper and card collected for recycling has increased by 60%.
  • Paper is truly sustainable, with waste fully recoverable ready for recycling into new paper.
